GAME RECAP: Giants Defeat Prep 9 - 4

After graduating 10 seniors last year and struggling during the preseason, the 2018/19 Giants opened their regular season at home versus Prep on 9/26 in dominating fashion with a 9-4 victory.  Prep took an early 1-0 lead only 13 seconds into the game, but their lead would be short lived as Jack Elbaum, on a beautiful feed from behind the net by Sam Shachtman, tied the game 30 seconds later.  The Giants, under the direction of new Head Coach and Hockey Director Anthony Booth, proceeded to outwork Prep and put 5 more pucks in the back of the net before the end of the first period to take a commanding 6-1 lead.

The other 5 first period goals were scored by, varsity newcomers, Will Rosenberg and Kolton Jacobs along with veterans George Giese, Sam Shachtman and Jack Elbaum.  The Giants never looked back.  Senior Zach Gordon was between the pipes and made 18 saves on 22 shots.

The Giants will be in action again on 10/3 when they visit New Trier at Winnetka Ice Arena.  Puck drop is scheduled for 9:10pm

HP Giants Scholarship Fund Donations

Updated 05/18/18

As all of us know, playing hockey is an expensive endeavor.  We believe every Highland Park HS student should be able to play the sport he loves regardless of his family’s financial circumstances.  Our club has a well-established Scholarship Fund, which is administered by a third party review panel, to assist those in need.  Over the past number of years, we have helped over 20 families cover the costs to ensure that their son(s) has been able to play hockey for the Giants.

Recently an anonymous donor has stepped forward and offered us an exciting opportunity whereby the donor will match, dollar for dollar, up to $11,400!  The Giants Hockey Board has taken on the challenge and we are seeking your help.

So how do we get the funds we use?  Through the generous financial support of people like you.   As a hockey lover, we know you support keeping skaters on the ice and out of trouble. Please consider helping us meet this challenge through a tax deductible donation at one of the following levels:

$50 - Assist

$100 – Play Maker

$250 - Goal Scorer

$500 - Hat Trick

????  - Cup Champion

Through your generous donation, you will help keep the hopes and dreams alive of young men to enjoy this incredible game, build life long friendships, and stay focused in school.  Whatever you can afford, will help us to ultimately achieve the match of $10,000!!!

An added benefit: for every $100.00 dollar increment of your donation will earn you an entry into a drawing for 1 of the 3 generously donated prizes listed below:

In a competitive game this past Wednesday evening, the GIANTS Varsity Hockey Team broke open a tight game midwaythrough the third period to beat the Deerfield Warriors 6-3.  In the victory, the GIANTS brought home THE CUP in this yearly rivalry game.  The electric atmosphere at the completely packed Glacier Ice Arena had both Student Bodies and Fans on the edge of their seats.  Both Teams were tied 2-2 after the first period.  In the second period, Michael Gallo scored his first of two goals on the evening to put the GIANTS up 3-2 after the second period.  Goals by Dylan Abt, Alec Powers and Michael Gallo in the third put the game out of reach.  Offensively on the evening for the GIANTS Ryan Genender, Dylan Abt, George Giese and Michael Gallo had two points each.  With Charlie Levine-Wolf, Sam Frazer, Sam Shachtman and Alec Powers contributing with a point each. Goaltender for the GIANTS Jack Manone, had a strong evening with 20 saves including a big save on a Penalty Shot.   It was very impressive seeing the Sportsmanship these young men displayed embracing each other and shaking hands after the game.  Most of them playing hockey with each other since they were very young.

Coach Freeman’s Varsity Hockey Team showed both determination and endurance this past weekend. The GIANTS traveled to Madison, WI. for the Mad City Veteran’s Cup Tournament.  They played five games in less than 48 hours, and won them all.  Once again, the Goaltending and Defense were tremendous.  Netminders Zach Gordon and Jack Manone just keep getting better.  The GIANTS offense also showed up in outscoring the competition 22-3 after four games.  In a fantastic Championship game, the GIANTS prevailed 1-0 against the pesky Barrington Bronco’s.  With many momentum changes throughout the game, Kyle Powers’ scored on a great assist from Sam Frazer with just 45 seconds left in the game.  Jack Manone was astounding in net for another one of his shutouts.  Mark your calendars for the big game against the rival DeerfieldWarriors on November 22 at Glacier Ice Arena.

HP Giants are the Champions of the Mad City Veterans Cup!

On Sunday evening, the HP Varisty GIANTS Hockey Team welcomed our Local Chapter of the Tiger Scouts to take in a game. And what a game they saw! The GIANTS hosted the Evanston Wildkits at Centennial Ice Arena. Senior Michael Gallo got the GIANTS on the board with a crafty shot from the slot. The Wildkits tied the game early in the second. With the score tied for over thirteen minutes, Senior Defenseman Grant Silver landed a rocket in the back of the net for the game winner! Goalie Zach Gordon has been stellar for the GIANTS this season. Zach had another outstanding game with 17 saves against an aggressive Evanston Team. The win puts the GIANTS in a tie for first in the tough CHAMPIONS DIVISION. Thanks to the Tiger Scouts for their great spirit and support. We hope to have them back soon. The GIANTS are off to Madison, WI. this weekend for the Mad City Veterans Cup Tournament. COME OUT AND BE A PART OF GIANTS HOCKEY!

Offensively the GIANTS had goals by Ryan Genender, Sam Fraser and George Giese with Kyle Powers adding a couple of assists. The GIANTS had another strong performance in net from Freshman Jack Manone with 24 saves. On Tuesday evening the GIANTS had another barn burner against New Trier White. The GIANTS played the Trevians to a 1-1 tie. The GIANTS had a great performance in net from Zach Gordon with giving up just one goal on 15 shots. The lone goal for the GIANTS was contributed by Gabe Schlussel. This will be an incredible series against the Trevians this coming season. The GIANTS have a very busy schedule coming up next week. With four games next week, 3 at HOME, the GIANTS will play next Monday, Wednesday and Sunday evenings at Centennial Ice Arena and an away game on Saturday evening in Rolling Meadows. COME OUT AND BE A PART OF GIANTS HOCKEY!

The  Varsity Team had another exciting week of Hockey.  Sunday the Team never quit and came back from being down 2-0 after to two periods to tie the #3 Glenbrook North Spartans 2-2. The action was outstanding from the outset.  After the Giants gave up a couple of power play goals, the goaltending and defense shut the Spartans down the rest of the way.   The Giants fought back with a beautiful goal from Ryan Genender early in the third period.  Then with an amazing effort from Dylan Abt in the offensive zone, Zach Chamberlin was able to score at the buzzer on a rebound from a Abt shot.  What a game!  Monday evening the Giants hosted New Trier Gray.  With Zach Gordon in net, the Giants dominated the play from start to finish putting up a 5-2 victory.  The Giants scoring came from Michael Gallo, who had two goals, Jordan Meek, Jack Elbaum and Sam Fraser.  The GIANTS schedule remains strong when they host Loyola on Sunday evening 7:10 PM and New Trier White on Tuesday the 17th at 9 PM.  Both games are at Centennial Ice.  COME OUT AND BE A PART OF GIANTS HOCKEY!

Welcome to the newest member of the Giants family!
